Function of the surgical mask

Filtering airborne transmissions
The surgical mask is designed to prevent two types of airborne transmission:
- Airborne transmissions, referred to as droplets, are larger than 5 µm. They are primarily emitted by saliva and upper respiratory secretions such as coughing, speaking, or sneezing. They sediment quickly and are likely to come into contact with the patient's ENT and ocular mucous membranes.
- Airborne transmissions, also known as airborne, are smaller than 5 microns. They are essentially made up of aerosols of fine droplets contained in coughs or dust that carry germs. Their viability depends on the environment in which these aerosols are emitted. They can then be inhaled by anyone near the transmitter.

The surgical mask is therefore one of the elements that allows airborne transmissions to be isolated from the person who is the source.
Wearing a surgical mask is mandatory for healthcare personnel to protect patients and equipment in an operating room. It is also required for contagious patients to protect their loved ones.
