Anal exploration, procedure and devices

The Importance of Anal Exploration

In popular language, the term hemorrhoids encompasses all anal or rectal ailments. But while hemorrhoidal disease is indeed the primary cause of anal pain, it is completely different from perianal abscess, anal fistula, proctalgia fugax, or perineal neuralgia. Only anal exploration and, in some cases, additional examinations, can establish an accurate diagnosis and therefore formulate appropriate treatment. Although this anal exploration is disruptive for the patient who must undergo it, it is a painless and quick examination.

Proctological examinations

During a proctological examination, the patient is usually in the knee-to-chest position or in the left lateral decubitus position. For an inspection of the anal verge, the proctologist performs a manual and visual examination using excellent lighting that allows exposure of the smooth skin area of the anus.

It is within the framework of a recto-anal investigation endoscopy that the practitioner uses more or less sophisticated medical devices. There are 3 main methods which are:

  • An anoscopy is used to view the mucosa of the anal canal, including the glandular part, the crypts, and the smooth skin area. The device used is short and equipped with a stylet to facilitate its insertion.
  • Rectoscopy is a more in-depth examination that extends to the rectosigmoid junction and explores the entire rectal mucosa. It is a painless exploration performed with a rigid tube measuring between 15 and 25 cm.
  • A sigmoidoscopy allows the rectum and the entire sigmoid colon to be examined. It requires the use of a long, flexible tube.

Devices adapted for anal exploration

Medical devices for performing these anal exploration examinations are defined by precise standards. This is the case for the auscultation anoscope, which can also be used in recto-anal surgical procedures.

The Beak and Self Light anoscopes from SAPI MED are among the most renowned medical devices in these fields. They allow for the most practical and comfortable anal exploration for both the proctologist and the patient. Designed for single use, they facilitate diagnosis and guarantee maximum hygiene conditions.
